What is Aluminum Nitride

What is Aluminum Nitride?

Popular for its excellent thermal conductivity as well as its electrical insulating property, aluminium nitride makes an ideal material for creating semiconductors. In the field of light emitter technology, it's used as a heat sink.

Property of Aluminium Nitride

Aluminum nitride (Ani) is an inorganic mixture of nitrogen and Aluminum. It is part of the wurtzite crystal structure , and has a spectrum of 6 eV at temperatures of room temperature. This makes it suitable for use in the area of deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. It is also used by circuits in semiconductors.

Aluminum Nitride (Al) is a technical ceramic available in thin and thick forms. It is produced using the process of carbothermal reduction. However, this process can cost a lot of money, so a cheaper powder preparation process needs to be investigated. A variety of sintering aids were used to raise the density of the powder to specifications.

Applications of Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum nitride may be used to make optical material such as nanotubes for chemical sensors. It can also be used as a substrate for silicon processing. It is extremely resistant erosion, corrosion and molten metals. It's stable at elevated temperatures under an inert gas atmosphere.

Aluminum nitride is found in nearly every metal. It is a gray to white powder. It's water-soluble and inorganic acids. It is, however, unstable in a hydrogen atmosphere. It is also highly flammable.

It is used for mobile phones, to create wireless frequency filters. It is also utilized in robotics and medical imaging. Its piezoelectric properties are also employed in bulk acoustic Resonators.

It has been reported that most of the recent research is focused around the creation of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) LEDs that work in the ultra-violet, which means that the wavelength of light is 250 nm. In May 2006, it was discovered that an inefficient light source could emit light with 220 nm in wavelength. A single aluminum nitride crystal has an energy gap of 6.2eV as measured by ultraviolet vacuum reflectance. Theoretically it is believed that the energy gap allows waves with dimensions of 200 nanometers to pass through. However, when implementing it commercially, many difficulties need to be overcome. Aluminum nitride is utilized in optoelectronic engineering, including inductive layers for optical storage interfaces as well as electronic substrates, chip carriers with high thermal conductivity, as well as military applications.

An epitaxial stretching technique for AlN crystals is also utilized in surface acoustic wave detectors because of the properties in the AlN piezoelectric phenomenon. The detectors sit over the silicon wafer. Only a handful can consistently produce these thin films.

Aluminum nitride ceramics have high durability at room temperature as well as high temperatures, they have a lower expansion coefficient and excellent thermal conductivity. They can be used as heat exchangers in structural components that are high temperature.

Utilizing the corrosion resistance of aluminum, iron, and other alloys Aluminum nitride can be utilized as crucibles or casting molds to smelt Al, Cu, Ag, Pb, and other metals.
